It’s important to know what you can do before severe weather strikes. Prepare to stay safe.

  • Get a kit. Flashlights, a radio and a first aid kit that can help you get through severe weather. Remember to think about your pets and any family member’s specific needs. 
  • Make a plan that includes information on where your family will meet in the event of an emergency. 
  • Stay informed. Tune in to the local forecast and trusted sources of information to see if you’re at risk for severe weather. 
  • Sign-up for ReadyHarris Alerts to receive local emergency notifications.
  • Purchase flood insurance
  • Check-in with your neighbor who may need assistance during a weather event.
  • Know where to go when a tornado is imminent

Take some time to strengthen your home prior to severe weather by:

  • Secure loose objects in the exterior of your home.
  • Consider buying surge protectors to protect your property.
  • Assess your home’s exterior and take any necessary actions.

Stay Safe During Severe Weather

Remember the following safety phrases and tips:

  • When thunder roars, go indoors!
  • Stay off the roads. Houston TranStar has the latest information on current road conditions. 
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Remember: Turn Around. Don’t Drown!
  • Stay Informed. Pay attention to alerts and warnings.
  • Ensure pets are indoors during severe weather. 
  • If you’re stuck in your car, remember that you’re safer there than being outdoors during a thunderstorm. 
  • If water rises, get to the highest level in the building, but never go into a closed attic.

Stay Safe After Severe Weather

Your environment can change after a powerful storm goes through the area.  

  • Continue to monitor the weather forecast.
  • Follow local authorities’ recommendations.
  • Check in with family and friends. 
  • Assess any damage safely.
  • Watch for fallen power lines and trees. Report downed power lines by calling CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222.
  • Do not touch downed power lines. 
  • Exercise caution when clearing debris.
  • If safe to do so, help your neighbor.
