UPDATE: Potential for Severe Weather Through Saturday
Yesterday’s storms produced as much as eight to 10 inches of rain in six hours and prompted many flash flood warnings across the region, along with several severe thunderstorm warnings. According to the
National Weather Service (NWS), the heavy rainfall and flash flooding threat continues through Saturday. Another round of storms is expected to move through the area this evening. The biggest threats from these storms will be hail, damaging wind and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.
NWS is forecasting heavier rain from Thursday to Saturday as a front stalls over the region. Multiple rounds of storms could produce widespread rainfall totals of five to eight inches or more across the county. The potential for street flooding and river flooding will increase with each round of rain. Bayou and creek flooding will be highly dependent on exactly where the heaviest rains fall.
The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) urges residents to pay close attention to the forecast, use caution when traveling in severe weather, and never drive into flooded areas.
HCOHSEM will continue to monitor conditions until the bad weather moves out.
What you should do:
Residents are encouraged monitor local forecast, road conditions and have multiple ways to get warnings.
DRIVE SAFELY - If you must travel, never drive into high water and use extreme caution at underpasses and low-lying areas where water accumulates.
- Always remember to Turn Around, Don’t Drown! DO NOT DRIVE through high water and DO NOT DRIVE AROUND BARRICADES.
