What you need to do:
Make sure your family stays safe during winter weather by preparing with these tips:
- Monitor local forecasts throughout the day. Listen to local officials for any road closures and safety information.
Cold weather preparation is easy – just remember to protect the “Four P’s”:people, pets, plants and pipes.
The 4 P’s for preparing your home for winter weather:
- PEOPLE - Keep your family warm by dressing in layers. Check on any elderly family members or neighbors that may need assistance.
- PETS - Dogs and cats get cold too. Bring pets inside to keep them healthy and safe. Have plenty of food and water for them.
- PLANTS - Cover or bring in delicate plants to keep them from freezing.
- PIPES - Cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing and breaks, and disconnect outdoor hoses.
Stay safe on the roads:
- PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE - Have a safety kit in your vehicle, and include a blanket and extra phone charger in case you are stranded.
Do not forget…
- SPACE HEATER SAFETY - Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. Remember to keep all heating sources away from drapes and furniture. Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector and never use generators, grills, camp stoves or similar devices indoors.
- POWER OUTAGE - Have a flashlight, extra batteries, portable cell phone charger, warm clothes, blankets and a weather radio in case the power goes out. If it gets too cold, go to a public place like the mall or a library to warm up.
