San Jacinto River Flooding Expected Tonight
The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) is monitoring major flooding in progress along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River in Northeast Harris County. According to the Harris County Flood Control District, the river is projected to rise an additional 10-15 feet from its current level tonight at FM 1485 and FM 2090, resulting in widespread and significant flooding by sunrise on Wednesday morning.
STAY OUT OF THE WATER!
The greatest danger will come from fast moving, rising waters. Residents should remain alert to changing conditions and remain at home, even if streets are flooded. Driving on flooded roads is the number one cause of death during flood events so remember: TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN! It takes only two feet of water to sweep a car away into flood waters.
In addition, wading or swimming in flood water is extremely dangerous. Fast moving waters can easily take an adult off their feet and lead to drowning. Wildlife, insects, debris, and potentially hazardous chemicals may also be in the water.
Impact Overview:
- Widespread lowland flooding is expected along the river, affecting numerous streets across Harris County. FM 1485 will be submerged under several feet of water, rendering it impassable.
- Streets closest to the water are in danger of flooding. Structure flooding is possible and residents in elevated homes may find themselves isolated for up to 24 hours.
Below are the subdivisions expected to be impacted by widespread flooding:
- Idle Glen Subdivision
- Northwood Country Estates
- River Terrace
- Cypress Point
- Kingwood Area:
- Flooding will occur in the low-lying, undeveloped areas of Kingwood that back up to the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. This primarily affects non-developed lands and backyards with bulkheads along the river. Structural flooding is not anticipated.
