TxDOT | TxDOT urges drivers to stay off roads as crews battle historic winter weather

HOUSTON – With winter weather continuing to impact travel across the Greater Houston region, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and prioritize safety.

TxDOT crews are working tirelessly to combat hazardous winter weather, re-treating major interstates, highway bridges, ramps, and overpasses. Snowplows have been deployed to address snow accumulation on key roadways.

Drivers are reminded to give work crews ample room to operate and slow down when approaching them. While TxDOT’s efforts aim to keep roads as safe as possible, driver caution remains critical in these dangerous conditions. (TxDOT Houston Emergency Operations B-Roll Video attached.)

“This has certainly been a historic event for the Houston District and our crews are out in full force treating roadways and plowing key highways,” said TxDOT Houston District Engineer Glenn Allbritton P.E. “We will continue to work around the clock to keep roads clear for first responders and critical supplies. However, we ask the traveling public to stay off the roads until conditions significantly improve.”

Plan Ahead and Stay Safe
TxDOT strongly encourages drivers to avoid unnecessary travel. For those who must drive, plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and monitoring road conditions through Houston TranStar and Drive Texas.

Winter Weather Travel Tips
If driving is unavoidable, use extreme caution and follow these safety tips:

  • Reduce speed and increase following distance to account for reduced traction on icy roads.
  • Anticipate delays and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Be courteous to others on the road, as everyone is navigating the same challenges.
  • Carry an emergency kit with essentials like food, water, blankets, and flashlights in case of an emergency.
  • Stay alert and remember that road conditions can change rapidly despite proactive measures.

“While our crews are dedicated to keeping the roadways as safe as possible, we need the public’s help to minimize risks,” said Raquelle Lewis,  TxDOT spokeswoman. “Stay off the roads if you can, and if travel is unavoidable, drive with extreme caution.
