Election Day in Harris County Continues as Forecasted
Despite Severe Weather Concerns
(HOUSTON, TX)—The Harris County Clerk’s Office (HCCO) is prepared to conduct the May 4 Uniform and Special Elections on Election Day, Saturday, May 4, 2024, despite severe weather concerns. Although Harris County has received several inches of rainfall over the past few days, no voting locations have been impacted by heavy rain or flooding. As of 1 p.m., May 3, all 151 voting locations will open as planned from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow.
“We understand that some Harris County voters are concerned about the possible impact that severe weather may have on Election Day this Saturday,” said Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth, the county’s chief election official. “It is our utmost priority to ensure the safety of voters and election workers.”
HCCO continues to monitor local weather conditions, including the possibility of heavy rain and flooding. The Elections Department staff is in contact with the facilities serving as vote centers to ensure buildings will open, election workers will remain safe, and voters will be able to cast their ballot on Election Day.
The Texas Election Code does not provide specific procedures for emergency weather conditions. However, in the event that a voting location is forced to close at any point on Election Day, HCCO will make every effort to advise voters of changes. Information will be shared on www.HarrisVotes.com, our official social media accounts (@HarrisVotes), and distributed through local media channels.
“In the event that a vote center is closed due to flooding, Harris County voters can visit any other location across the county,” explained Clerk Hudspeth. “Our office is in contact with local authorities, and we will do all that is possible to ensure a smooth and safe Election Day.”
HCCO is coordinating with the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for guidance regarding areas impacted by severe weather. HCCO will inform the public of any changes or closures as they occur.
